Insulisation

By Ieuan Dolby

The ability of man to hate those different to themselves has been proven beyond doubt. Without exception man has slowly knocked off any questions they may have about their ability to tolerate or accept those who think or act in a different manner. In the 22nd Century man has aptly proved, despite repeatedly saying that the world must become a greener place and that effort must be placed on preserving natural resources, that war comes first and uppermost and without fail.

War is an easy solution, talking is not.

If the world continues at the same rate of pace then total annihilation will not be long in coming and if something is not done soon and quickly. It seems that neighboring nations cannot get on with each other: it is obvious that Free Trade Agreements are not about trade at all but rather bargaining chips for military prowess and that despite endless talks nothing gets solved at the table.

So is Globalisation the answer? If we cannot get on with each other, if we cannot make a better world to live in for all through the coming together of nations then it must be time to hunt out other means of survival and to start looking for other ways in which we can improve the world around us. Not the world as a whole but our world - the place that an individual lives in, his house, his street, his town. The things's that are important to each and every person rather than the world that lies outside and out of mind and over the hills and far away.

Let us become selfish, let us start looking after that which counts, the family and friends who make up a life. Let us become insular and secular and let us be happy and without threat of war and aggression at every turn. Let us improve the quality of life that the individual at home lives rather than trying to improve the lives of others far away - the end result of which has proved that all lives suffer with no apparent winners. Let us solve the problems at home first and when secure and safe in a comfortable and cozy existence then it maybe time to step out and to try and lead the world by example. How can countries and leaders profess to become world peacekeeper's when they themselves have daily aggression and terror on their own doorsteps (e.g. Britain with the IRA, Spain with EFTA), how can they step foot into other nations when they cannot solve their own problems?

It is time for nations to withdraw inwards and for leaders to consider the wealth and daily life of their own citizens. Is it possible to do this? At the moment attitudes and trends suggest not. If a person hints towards their lack of interest in a current world event those around will accuse him of having a lack of morals, of not caring for others and in general he will have violated modern thinking practices. Currently we feel obliged to listen to and be involved in problems and madness from all corners of the globe. Society dictates that we must invest feelings and moral responsibility into an event that is happening thousands of miles away, that has and will never have impact on our immediate life and that is the cause and result of people so infected with ill-intent that no amount of input is going to help improve their situation anyway.

It can be said that modern wars although under the banner of moral duty are all about gaining or retaining Trade and Economic Prowess through domination and forceful partnership. Leaders step out into the big wide world and wield military might as a means towards the improvement of life and welfare of the citizens at home. But with recent events and the resultant fear and threat that we live in, the ability to spend money freely and to live a rich and spendthrift life no longer means so much. To live frugally and happily is a far better option than to live with wealth and fear on a daily basis.

The average person in the average town would prefer to let their children play outside on the streets, to have decent and wholesome food on the table, to be able to shop and travel without fear and to live a safe and stress free life on a daily and ongoing basis. All this in preference to the promises that leaders make and sprout out, preferable to the dreams of wealth that remain unfulfilled and to the daily stress of trying to cope with a life that does not get any better.

It is time for insulization!

It is time for nations to withdraw to become self sufficient unities, to look after their own and to improve the value of life rather than pushing material worth as a common standard. If leaders retreat from aggression and from making ridiculing statements about other nations and policies, if leaders looked inwards and towards self sufficiency then maybe the world will eventually become a better place to live in.

To have decent and whole food that is not dowsed in chemicals and genetically modified; to have trees and flowers all around; to live in a place were the threat of nuclear or chemical accidents happening and to live in a house with a garden, would be a life worth living. For that most people will forsake the car, the savings account, the Japanese television and the latest mobile phone, for that the average citizen will discard the imported Chinese noodles and the Tea from Ceylon and for that most people will travel only at home and forget the thoughts of holidays abroad.

For a simple and wholesome life, one without fear and danger lurking around the corner, material worth no longer has a place in society. For a happy existence and a simple and stress free life, money and importance has no place.

To be part of a world without fear and aggression as the controlling device is probably a dream. But one that should be considered and one that will only be realized if nations withdraw inwards and look to themselves for answers first before turning outwards. If nations practice insulization and self sufficiency, if they learn how to make their own lives models of perfect existence in peace with nature and with themselves can they then look outwards to dispense advice and wisdom.

Only when individuals of nations have a life worth living can those nations as a whole then turn to others and say this is how we should work towards world peace and harmony in the world.
