Saved in the Nick of Time

The crew deserted in favor of the lifeboat and the rats dived into the frothing waters beneath. The boat shuddered as another wave sprang against the remaining timbers but as abruptly as it had come, the silence returned. The shamefaced seamen clambered back onboard and the drowned rats cried wistfully as the ship sailed away.
