Twenty Years Before the Antenna MastBy Roy PhilpottMV Fort CalgaryTrip: Forty Eight Call Sign: Company: CP Specs: 21893 GRT 13100 BHP Rank: R/E/O Joined: Long Beach 8/3/86 Departed: Bordeaux 3/6/86 Long beach, Panama, New Orleans, Savannah, Charleston, Norfolk, Fredrikstad (Norway), Bordeaux. The Calgary was a geared bulk carrier and that meant she could discharge herself and did not require special cranes ashore to do it. This enabled us to go to smaller ports and work various types of cargo, similar to the old general cargo ships of yesteryear. It had the added advantage that our time in port was generally longer than that of some of the other types of ship. The cranes however were always a source of trouble that kept the electrician and engineers busy. At New Orleans, I managed to meet up with an old amateur friend of mine again, which was very pleasant. Savannah and Charleston were old historical cities and very interesting to look around. We were berthed not far from the centers of both cities and did not have far to walk to places of interest. Other than that, I really cannot remember anything about this trip. I will have to look up the photographs to see what happened. Maybe we had no noteworthy catastrophes! |
