The Macau that I Know

A little Island, for some while a Portuguese colony and now one of the SARS (Special Autonomous Regions) of the Peoples Republic of China it is becoming the South East Asian hot spot for gambling and all the accoutrements associated with such. As the Mainland Chinese travel more, as they seek an outlet for their new found wealth Macau is grabbing a large amount of the jackpot and casinos rise faster than one can blink an eye! Cash machines suddenly appear in brick walls as banks cater to surging demand, tourists flock in to stay at abundant hotels and the historical value that the Island holds is slowly suffering neglect!

Land reclamation is increasing as space runs short, international airlines find it hard to land on the small runway and Chinese flock by the millions across the large strip of the land and bridge serpent that connects the two together.

Food is of choice, windy streets and shops issue Indian, Chinese and Portuguese influence in harmony! The European styled center-of-town houses the brand names of Giordano and Swatch whilst in the back streets gold is sold by Hawkish sellers; tourists haggle over trinkets and a culture built from occupation continues freely.

Macau is the Vegas of the US with the only competition coming from Singapore who is itself building Casinos. But there are a few million Mainland Chinese with pockets full of cash to spend so the future looks rosy all round.
